The most common items eaten are Clay (geophagia), ice (pagophagia), dirt, and flaking paint. People with Pica will crave or eat items that are not food and have no nutritional value. Low birth weight, premature birth, mental and physical abnormalities, and even death among infants whose mothers practice pica during pregnancy. Pica is a psychological and a compulsive eating disorder. Pica is an eating disorder typically defined as the persistent ingestion of nonnutritive substances for at least 1 month at an age for which this behavior is developmentally inappropriate.High blood pressure, high levels of sodium salts in the blood, and abnormal liver functions such as those resulting from consuming large quantities of baking powder. Pica is simply defined as the consumption of none food products such as laundry starch, clay dirt, ice, soap, and chalk. This one is very interesting and it is quite different from the previously explained reasons because, in this case, people tend to eat cornstarch raw.
